I’ve always found great joy in journaling and in family photographs. In the 1970’s I started creating illustrated journals of my family’s life, especially our summer vacations when three families crammed into one house on a lake in upstate New York. It was a fun way to chronicle the hectic sweetness of our lives as our family grew up.

Over time, extended family and friends saw these journals and asked me to put their stories to paper. By carefully assembling photos, letters, and other bits and pieces of their life, I create intimate and personal portraits. Unlike a portrait in paint or pastel, I love to “draw with scissors,” a term coined by Henri Matisse. I use paper cutouts as my way of assembling joyful memories and creating a unique piece of art.

My work uses repurposed family photographs that are both narrative and abstract, yet at the same time, intimate and personal, to preserve your special memories for generations to come. They’re a unique way to honor a loved one or to remember a special person who made a difference in your life!
