Shabbat

One in a series of 15 works entitled “Rituals,” these collages  combine the historical significance of Jewish holidays, festivals, life cycle events as well as contemporary ritual practices inspired by my family, with traditions passed down to me from generation to generation. My grandmothers and mother lit their “Shabbos” candlesticks each Friday evening, often covering their heads with a lace or white kerchief. The commandment to “remember to keep the Sabbath” (Shabbat in Hebrew) remains to be an integral ritual that identifies a Jewish home.

Collage; pastel, gouache, paper cutout, lace, fabric. 11″ x 14”
